Over The Edge
Amsterdam is a city generally best enjoyed at street level. Unlike London or New York, there is no skyline to speak of and few iconic buildings more than a few stories high. Rather there are wonderful bridges and canalscapes, small corners and courtyards, and of course the iconic narrow canal houses best enjoyed by looking up.
However, change is a-coming and Amsterdam has it’s very own skyscraper from which you can get a rather unique view. The 22 story (rather ugly) Shell building may be 45 years old, but it was redeveloped last year and turned into what-else – a creative “hub”.
As well as being renamed A’DAM and offering a home to a variety of tech companies, it also now accommodates a music school; a nightclub; the Sir Adam Boutique Hotel; a revolving restaurant on the 19th floor and, most extraordinary of all, Europe’s highest swing.
Yes, you read that right, the recently opened attraction allows thrill-seekers to swing right over the edge of the observation deck and dangle their feet above the city at 100m, assisted of course by a seat-belt, hydraulic power and good old-fashioned leg propulsion.
Not for the faint-hearted, but without doubt an Amsterdam date to remember.
