George

George Amsterdam is a small collection of restaurants based on the concept of “A French Brasserie in New York…in Amsterdam”.

Each of the 7 Amsterdam branches has its own look and feel and a slightly different menu (this is no chain) but all are hugely reliable and popular.

The atmosphere is reminiscent of Soho House without the membership – interiors are that reassuring blend of metro tiles, leather couches, brass and marble with outdoor terraces that are quite the scene – expect lots of willowy blondes swooshing their hair (searching for George on Instagram throws up some brilliant poses.)

But make no mistake, you don’t have to look like one of the Dutch women’s Olympic hockey team to get a seat.  Our boys love George and most branches have a kids’ menu full of crowdpleasers.

If you’re in the heart of town it’s Cafe George you want.  Travel just beyond the Museum District to the side of the Vondelpark and you’re in Amsterdam’s version of Chelsea where Sunday brunch on the terrace of George WPA is a must, or head to Petit George just down the road.

Food-wise expect Bistro comfort stalwarts: eggs benny, club sandwiches, steak frites, lobster rolls, chicken on the spit, burgers and ceasar salads.  Head there for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or just while away a few hours with a newspaper and a spot of people watching.

I’ll leave you with George in their own words.

First up Cafe George…

Hidden on a lovely, monumental canal downtown, upbeat Café George has been one of Amsterdam’s greatest hits for years now. With its iconic entrance, tile walls, catwalk like mosaic floor and classic Thonet chairs, it’s definitely an influencers favourite and famous photospot, where you might mingle with a local celebrity, international creatives or simply our next-door neighbour.

Often copied, but never equalled, our all-day restaurant resembles a cool, NYC-style bistro, featuring a contemporary twist on French brasserie dishes. Think: Steak Tartare and Moules Frites, topped with a dash of Manhattan’s timeless favourites, like the infamous Reuben sandwich – as ‘New York’ as it gets.

Drop by for a coffee between shopping and sight-seeing, share a bottle of champagne and a plate of oysters with your friends for lunch, or sip a perfectly balanced cocktail at the long, marble bar at night. In truth, though, there’s never a wrong time to visit Café George.

Followed by the incomparable George W.P.A…

Boasting one of the most beautiful and fashionable terraces in town, combining the elegance of a fancy brasserie with the casual vibe of a neighbourhood get-together, George W.P.A. has become a beloved favourite in the Amsterdam Upper South side.

A love affair between French and New York cuisine, the menu has items ranging from grilled lobster to juicy burgers, and an outstanding choice of fruits de mer in between. George W.P.A. basically serves anything your food-loving heart could ever dream up – all day every day. PS: We do pretty amazing cocktails too.

George W.P.A. is located on an incredibly charming street, just around the corner of the famous Vondelpark and the Amsterdam museum district. A warm place with sexy vibes where locals, expats, families, loved ones and friends come together to sip a glass of wine, watch people go by and enjoy our famous Blackened Tuna or other signature dishes. With it’s romantic atmosphere, it’s also the best start for a tantalizing weekend date.
